About us

Horses change lives, Rosemary says, as she tells the story of Jodie. Born in a stable on the Isle of Wight UK in 1990 Jodie was a spirited filly who grew up unpredictable with a lot of attitude! Despite her lifetime of horse experience, Rosemary was at a complete loss as to how to deal with her. Sending her to professional conventional trainers only made matters worse.

Fortune was smiling the day Rosemary met Mel Richards, whose natural horse womanship skills deeply impressed her as she “danced” with her horse at liberty at a NHS centre in Sussex. Soon after that Rosemary rented her 10 acre farm and drove Jodie and Mary (Jodie’s mum) to Wales where she studied NHS with Mel for 6 months.

Rosemary emigrated to New Zealand in 2003 and set up business in 2005. Dune Lakes Lodge sits at the edge of Woodhill Forest. Only an hour from Auckland the beautiful 100 year old villa sits in 37 acres  shared with 15 horses, 2 dogs, 3 cats, ducks, wild peacocks, deer and a yurt (Mongolian tent) lovingly constructed from a eucalyptus tree that blew down in a friend’s garden.

Dune Lakes Lodge is THE ultimate Horse/Human Experience and home to New Zealand’s HALO and Natural Horsemanship Centre.

NZ HALO™ (New Zealand’s Horse Assisted Learning Organisation) incorporates excellent facilities and committed professionals (horses and human) providing development & learning programmes geared to each individual need and goal. It is experiential and non-directive in nature. It’s not about teaching riding or horse care skills - and no previous experience of horses is necessary. It has been clinically proven that being in the vicinity of horses changes brainwave patterns. They have a calming effect, which helps stop people becoming fixated on past or negative events - giving them a really positive experience.

NZ  HALO™offers Team Building Workshops; Personalised Leadership Development Courses; Business and Corporate Training Programmes; Team interactive Youth Programmes and Personal, Couples and Family Growth and Development Workshops.

The Natural Horsemanship Centre has regular clinics and workshops helping horse owners that have problems with their horses. Based on mutual trust and respect, using a natural and calm approach, they start horses under saddle or retrain horses so that they learn through understanding, not fear. Using body language, pressure and release plus focused energy they communicate to horses in a way they understand and accept. Knowing how horses communicate with other horses and utilising that language, has proven successful in our kind and gentle approach to horse starting, handling and riding.

This method gives a solid foundation for any riding discipline and has a huge impact with most behavioural issues, such as trailer loading, catching, bolting, rearing, bucking, biting and head flicking.

Rosemary believes that it’s the children who will transform the way horses are kept and ridden, incorporating their holistic horse management philosophies they hold kids camps holiday programmes where hundreds of children enjoying riding barefoot, bit-free and in treeless saddles in the beautiful environs of Woodhill Forest and Muriwai Beach.
